Alarming Lionel Messi stat highlights PSG struggles after Nice

An altogether head-turning statistic surrounding the production, or more so lack thereof, on the part of Lionel Messi during Paris Saint-Germain’s meeting with OGC Nice on Saturday has come to the fore online.

Argentine icon Messi has of course seen his form regularly called into question of late, amid a trying stint in the French capital on the back of his summer departure from long-time employers Barcelona.

The 34-year-old, in turn, headed into PSG’s Ligue 1 clash with Nice just shy of 24 hours ago in the knowledge that he had still found the net just twice in 17 appearances in France’s top-flight across the campaign to date.

The latest efforts on Messi’s part to right his goalscoring woes, however, did not go exactly according to plan, to put it lightly.

In fact, as revealed in the game’s aftermath, the 7-time Ballon d’Or winner did not manage a single shot across the 90 minutes at the Allianz Riviera on Saturday.

This marks the first time that Messi failed to get an effort away on goal in a league fixture in which he fully participated since all the way back in the 2009/10 season.

Delort makes the difference

Messi, however, in his defence, was far from the only member of Mauricio Pochettino’s star-studded squad to have struggled across the 90 minutes at the Riviera late last night.

Alongside the Argentine, the likes of Neymar and Angel Di Maria too toiled in their efforts to carve out clear-cut opportunities for the visitors, with the absence of the game-changing Kylian Mbappe sorely felt.

In turn, it did not come as all that much of a surprise when it was Nice who eventually bagged the game’s winner late on, courtesy of a fine finish on the part of Andy Delort:

Oh Lord, Andy Delort! That’s a ridiculous finish! 😱
