Kelly Clarkson Asks Judge to Legally Restore Her Last Name Amid Divorce

Kelly Clarkson is taking a big step in her divorce from her estranged husband Brandon Blackstock as she has reportedly asked a judge to restore her last name.

According to new legal documents obtained by The Blast, the thirty-nine-year-old singer has asked to legally change her name moving forward. Clarkson has asked a divorce judge to allow her to restore her famous last name following a nasty and arduous divorce with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock.

The legal documents show Clarkson is asking for a default judgment in her ongoing case, which will officially make her divorced. In the filing, she is also asking for her name to be restored and legally change it going forward.

The Blast previously disclosed how many of the problems with the divorce stem from financial agreements, including spousal and child support and whether or not they will split their property or not depending on details of their prenuptial agreement.

“Petitioner requests restoration of the former name as set forth in the proposed judgment” the document reads.

Blackstock obviously isn’t putting up a fight in this department, so most of the time the judge signs off on these sorts of requests right away. Clarkson originally filed for divorce in June 2020 after 7 years of marriage.

Last month a judge signed off on the divorce which declared her legally single according to PEOPLE. In a declaration to the court, Clarkson reasoned that she and Blackstock “both deserve the opportunity to build a new life.”

In November, an LA County judge granted Clarkson primary physical custody of their children River Rose, and Remington Alexander.

A source close to the family told PEOPLE at the time that Clarkson is “pleased” by the custody ruling and that her priority is to protect her children.

“As Kelly has said, her first priority in all of this is to take care of the kids and all the hearts that are involved in this divorce,” a second source said. “It’s been a hard time for everyone, but Kelly’s pleased with the court’s ruling regarding custody.”

“Divorce is hard and it gets tense for most couples going through it. But Kelly’s primary focus is on doing the best she can to protect the kids,” the source added. “In this case, she had to fight for them since Brandon and his attorneys were making unreasonable requests.”

Blackstock is seeking $436,000 in monthly spousal and child support. This means if it sticks, that he’d receive more than $5.2 million per year.

On the bright side, Clarkson seemed to be channeling a lot of her stress surrounding the divorce into her music: “I have written like, 60 songs,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “It is an insane amount of getting it out.”

“I think that’s a blessing in itself,” she went on. “Anytime you go through some life, it’s such an awesome thing to have that outlet, regardless of whether people hear it or not.”

She later added: “I don’t know how anybody, I’ll just be real with you, goes through grief like divorce, any kind of grief, any kind of loss, without having an outlet like this.”
