Official: Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero announces retirement from football

Sergio Aguero has, on Wednesday, officially announced his retirement from football.

Sergio Aguero’s heart issue

Some altogether concerning scenes played out at the back end of October when Barcelona faced off with Alaves.

Sergio Aguero would go down during the clash, clutching his chest and seemingly struggling to breathe.

Thankfully, the Argentine was able to leave the pitch on foot:

Concerning scenes near the end of the first half at Camp Nou, but thankfully Sergio Aguero was able to leave the pitch without the need for a stretcher 🙏

The news since, though, has been less than ideal for Aguero.

It was reported in the Spanish press that Aguero was suffering from an arrhythmia of the heart.

This was followed by FC Barcelona confirming on November 1st that their summer addition would be unavailable for the next three months.

However, further reports have emerged that claimed that Aguero would announce his retirement from football on Wednesday (today):

Sergio Aguero announces retirement

And, on Wednesday morning at 11 pm UK time, that is exactly what Aguero did.

Aguero held a press conference with Barcelona, in which, after some emotional scenes, he confirmed that he was indeed retiring from football:

Aguero stated:

“This conference is to announce I have decided to stop playing professional football. It is a very difficult moment. The decision I have taken for my health; the problem I had a month and a half ago. I have been in good hands with the medical staff. I made the decision 10 days ago after doing everything possible to have some hope of playing on. I am very proud for my career. I always dreamed of a professional career since the first time I touched a ball at five.

“I want to thank Atletico Madrid who took a chance on me when I was 18 and Manchester City, everyone knows who I feel about City and how well they treated me there.”

A truly devastating day for the Argentine. But he will no doubt be remembered as arguably Manchester City’s greatest-ever player and as one of the Premier League’s best-ever strikers.

The forward netted 184 times in the Premier League, making him the 4th-highest scorer in the competition’s history and the highest-scoring foreign star ahead of Thierry Henry.
