Opinion: Arsenal should use Villarreal interest in Mari to land exciting winger

Villarreal eye Pablo Mari

Reports coming out of Italy claim Villarreal are interested in Arsenal defender, Pablo Mari.

Mari has previously spent time in Spain with RCD Mallorca, Deportivo de la Coruna and Girona.

Now, with Arsenal, Mari is very much a fringe star and has made just two Premier League appearances this term.

And with William Saliba due back in north London this summer, it is hard to see Mari’s game time improving too much, even if Arsenal do secure some form of European football.

So, as it has been claimed that Villarreal are interested in signing Mari, the Gunners should use that interest to their advantage to help improve their squad.

Arsenal should target Danjuma

Swap deals are not uncommon in the footballing world, especially in the Covid-19 era when sides have taken a financial hit.

And, whilst Arsenal could not directly swap Mari for this Villarreal star, they should try and include the defender in a deal for Arnaut Danjuma.

Danjuma is likely most remembered by English football fans for his stint with AFC Bournemouth.

Danjuma joined Bournemouth in 2019 from Club Brugge. The winger was unable to help the Cherries avoid relegation, but would shine for them in the Championship last season.

In 33 league games last term, he scored 15 and assisted a further seven as Bournemouth narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

However, after missing out on promotion, Bournemouth opted to sell the winger to the current Europa League holders, Villareal.

The 24-year-old has since scored nine and assisted three in 18 outings across all competitions for the Yellow Submarine this term.

Danjuma is an incredibly fast winger who has proven on the biggest stage that he is at an elite level, including when he caused Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot all sorts of issues in the Champions League back in September.

And, whilst Arsenal do have a decent number of attacking options at their disposal right now, Danjuma could still be an asset.

This is because Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal’s main left-winger before his recent issues, is now out of favour and is reportedly available to depart the club.

Gabriel Martinelli has since come in to fill that void fairly well. But if Arsenal can land Danjuma, then they would be able to use the Brazilian as a centre-forward, which was his position before he joined the club.

It is also worth noting that Unai Emery has used Danjuma as a centre-forward on several occasions in 2021/22 with a fair amount of success, suggesting the Dutchman could be an almost like-for-like replacement for Aubameyang.
