Email Is Not Dead. Your Emails Are.

Every year, a headline declares email dead, and every year email quietly returns thirty-plus dollars for every dollar spent. The channel is not the problem. The problem is that most marketing email is written for the sender — announcements, promotions, noise — instead of for the person holding the phone.

The inbox is a relationship, not a billboard

The best-performing programs we study share one trait: they would be worth reading even if they never sold anything. They teach, they curate, they have a voice. Selling becomes easy precisely because selling is not the only thing happening. When every email asks, the answer becomes no. When most emails give, the occasional ask lands.

Write the email you would open on a Sunday morning. Then, and only then, attach the offer.

Three fixes that move numbers this quarter

  • Segment by behavior, not demographics — what people do predicts what they buy.
  • Kill the newsletter template; plain, personal-looking text routinely outperforms heavy design.
  • Automate the moments that matter: welcome, abandonment, post-purchase, win-back.

Email is the only major channel you own outright. Treat the list like an asset on the balance sheet — because it is one.
